Outpatient Treatment

What is Intensive Outpatient (IOP) and Extended Outpatient treatment (EOP)?

Intensive Outpatient Treatment (IOP), Medications for Substance Use Disorders (MSUD), and Extended Outpatient (EOP) programs help people who are starting to recover from substance use problems. These programs offer services like one-on-one and group therapy, lessons about alcohol and drugs, tips to avoid relapse, family therapy, and support after treatment.

Intensive Outpatient treatment for adults is offered in both day and evening hours and runs three times per week, three hours each day, Monday through Friday. The InterCommunity Outpatient Counseling Centers in East Hartford and Hartford are located on city bus lines and offer ample parking.

Outpatient treatment services are available in Hartford, East Hartford, and South Windsor.

Medications for Substance Use Disorder (MSUD) Treatment

At InterCommunity, we provide treatment for substance use problems, also called Substance Use Disorders (SUDs), using medicines that support recovery. Many of these medicines are approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), including:

  • For opioid problems: Buprenorphine (taken as films, or a pill or injection) and naltrexone (taken as a pill or injection).
  • For alcohol problems: Naltrexone (pill or injection) and acamprosate.

For substances where no FDA-approved medicines are available, our team of board-certified addiction specialists and healthcare providers works with patients to find the best treatment options. This may include using other medications that are safe and effective, along with a personalized care plan that fits each person's needs and goals.

We know recovery involves more than just medicine. That’s why we offer therapy and social support services, such as:

  • Counseling: One-on-one therapy or group sessions to help with emotional and mental health.
  • Help with basic needs: Referrals for housing, food, transportation, or finding community resources.
  • Life skills: Support with job training, education, or managing daily challenges.

Treatment plans are developed together with clients to ensure they meet individual goals. You don’t need a referral to start – you can walk in or reach out to us directly.

Our outpatient clinics are located in Hartford, East Hartford, and South Windsor, with early morning and evening hours to fit your schedule.

Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction (LDBI)

Our Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction (LDBI) program is a compassionate, evidence-based approach to help individuals transition from opioid use to recovery. Designed with the unique challenges of fentanyl in mind, LDBI gradually introduces buprenorphine over several days, minimizing severe withdrawal symptoms and improving comfort. This step-by-step process allows your body to adjust smoothly, reducing cravings and supporting long-term recovery. With daily monitoring and personalized support, our team is committed to making your journey to recovery safe and manageable.
