InterCommunity Leads the Way with Innovative Opioid Withdrawal Treatment

Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction (LDBI)

For individuals battling opioid addiction, especially those impacted by fentanyl, hope can feel out of reach. InterCommunity Inc. is changing that. As the only provider in the region offering Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction (LDBI), InterCommunity is leading the way with a safe, more compassionate approach to recovery.

The opioid crisis continues to grow across the country, with fentanyl causing many overdose deaths. In Connecticut, the problem is similar. In 2021, more than 10,700 Medicaid patients received buprenorphine treatment for opioid addiction, up from about 7,200 in 2019 (Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, 2022).

LDBI is transforming lives by making the first steps of opioid withdrawal manageable and dignified. Unlike traditional methods that often bring severe withdrawal symptoms, LDBI introduces buprenorphine gradually—giving patients relief, reducing discomfort, and offering a clear path forward.

Dr. Chad McDonald, Chief Medical Officer at InterCommunity, highlights the importance of this approach: “Low-Dose Buprenorphine Induction (LDBI) is a breakthrough for treating fentanyl addiction. Fentanyl stays in the body longer and acts faster, making old methods of starting buprenorphine risky and unpredictable. Many avoided treatment out of fear of severe withdrawal, thinking methadone was their only option. With LDBI, we offer a safer, more comfortable way to start buprenorphine, giving patients a better chance at recovery. This is a game-changer.”

“We know that starting treatment is often the hardest step,” said Tyler V.R. Booth, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer at InterCommunity. “With LDBI, we’re removing fear and barriers for people who desperately need care. It’s about treating patients with respect and meeting them where they are on their journey to recovery.”

"I've seen people on the street take Suboxone and get really sick, so I wasn't sure if it was something I wanted to do, but I'm glad I did,” said a patient, who wishes to remain anonymous and has recently completed the treatment. "I'm not using anymore. This medicine has helped me be more active in detox, going to more groups and talking with other people. I normally stay in my room because I'm so sick, but I don't feel that way this time.”

InterCommunity’s innovative use of LDBI reflects its unwavering commitment to offering cutting-edge, evidence-based care. The program is medically monitored, focused on safety, and designed to help individuals regain control of their lives.

For those ready to take the next step, InterCommunity is here. The promise is simple: relief, hope, and a second chance.
